Why Security Experts Urge Windows Users to Uninstall QuickTime?

QuickTime was once a popular tool for playing video and audio files on computers, but it has been gradually replaced by other similar products. There are a lot of media players can be used by computer users as an alternative to QuickTime. It hasn’t been updated since January this year which is saying that this software fell into disfavor and Apple will no longer deliver security updates for it. Despite of the fact that there are security loopholes except for two known critical ones increasingly being uncovered, Apple merely ended support for this product and released the news via Trend Micro.

The sign of QuickTime being abandoned can be traced as Apple did not upgrade it to run on Windows 8 and 10 officially while some advanced computer users figured out some way to make it work. What is more, if you have noticed, Apple has already removed the browser plug-in for QuickTime in its January update. This means that the chances for Windows users to get online attacks through QuickTime plug-in were largely increased in past few months.

The two most critical vulnerabilities found in QuickTime are ZDI-16-242 and ZDI-16-241. These two security holes were disclosed by Trend Micro’s Zero Day Initiative, a reputable program that gives bonus to security researchers who report security vulnerabilities. The found vulnerabilities allow attackers to remotely execute code after users have visited a malicious page or opened malicious files. The exploited vulnerabilities in QuickTime could result in complete compromise of the affected computers. Sophisticated hackers are capable of taking advantage of the vulnerabilities to execute malicious code remotely when a user visits an unsecure webpage or opens a malicious file.

This security warning does not apply to Mac users since Apple still keeps providing security updates for QuickTime Player 10 on Mac OS. However, Windows users who keep outdated QuickTime installed on their computers could easily suffer from severe consequences such as random system crash, identity theft and financial loss. In this event you have to uninstall QuickTime Player from your Windows computer as early as you can.
